10 Tips for a Healthier Back

  1. Build Back Strength and Flexibility. Perform 30 minutes of low-impact exercise (swimming, biking, walking) at least 3 times a week. Going for a walk uses several back muscles and gently moves the spinal bones, strengthening and lubricating the joints.
  2. Regular Tortoise Shellz® Therapy. Frequent BFST® treatments maintain healthier muscle fibers, ligaments, and spinal joints. If you experience tension in your shoulders and upper back, BFST® relaxes muscles and reduces the risk of back injury.
  3. Be Kind to Your Muscles. Warm up your muscles before use with a light jog, dynamic stretching, or a BFST® treatment and gently stretch before and after physical activity or exercise.
  4. Customize Your Work Area. Ensure your desk or workbench is at a comfortable height and keep your shoulders back while you work. If sitting, use a chair with lumbar support and adjust the height accordingly.
  5. Strengthen Your Abdominal Muscles to reduce stress on your lower back. Ask your doctor for a list of abdominal and oblique exercises appropriate for your fitness level. It's important to perform these exercises correctly so you don't do more harm than good.
  6. Make Healthy Choices. Proper nutrition (calcium and vitamin D, phosphorous) will make bones stronger and promote a healthier weight to reduce stress on your back muscles. Also, reduce or stop smoking as it decreases blood flow to the spine and can lead to disc degeneration.
  7. Sleep Right! Sleeping on your stomach causes stress in the curvature of your spine. Instead, sleep on your side with your knees slightly bent. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees or a lumbar roll under your lower back.
  8. Mom Was Right, Don't Slouch! Proper posture reduces stress on the back, neck and shoulders. Distribute your weight evenly on both hips and focus on maintaining the 3 natural curves in your spine. Tip: Check your posture in the mirror to make any corrections and become familiar with what proper posture should feel like.

  9. Function or Fashion? Choose low heels or flat, comfortable footwear as often as you can. Your feet and lower back will appreciate it.
  10. Use the Correct Technique when lifting or moving objects and don't lift anything too heavy for you. Keep the object close to you, align your spine and neck, and don't twist while you lift with your hips, knees and abdominal muscles. If you have the option, push instead of pull when moving an object, or use a tool to make the job easier.
  11. Take care of your back and it will serve you well for years to come!
